Looking at Kwantlen’s new BBA in marketing

With the co-op programs being so popular at Kwantlen, many students have come to covet the much needed boost that the co-op work experiences bring to the table and their resumes. But in terms of a four-year degree program in Marketing, Kwantlen has unfortunately been left behind. Until September of this year that is.

It is something we as University students are hearing more and more of: “get work experience”, “Get something on your resume.” Despite their sensible messages, the classic “Get a degree under your belt” still seems to echo through the corridors of good intention. I find that as a student, it is hard to know which direction to take. One route requires a large amount of money that unfortunately a lot of us don’t have just kickin’ around and the other requires you to enter the workforce early, gambling that some young firecracker with a shiny degree and wristwatch might snatch your job from right under your nose, while you are on a Tim Hortons break. At times the business world can be cutthroat and as a business student these things are important to consider; so let’s consider the options.

With the co-op programs being so popular at Kwantlen, many students have come to covet the much needed boost that the co-op work experiences bring to the table and their resumes. But in terms of a four-year degree program in Marketing, Kwantlen has unfortunately been left behind. Until September of this year that is.  Before the new program introduction Kwantlen only offered the marketing management diploma, a comprehensive program designed to offer a rudimentary foundation in the field of marketing; a program that was originally designed to streamline into a BBA in entrepreneurial leadership. But now with the recent introduction of the Marketing Management Degree, students can now acquire strong fundamentals in all aspect of business like job ready skills and attitude; as well as the ability to apply both digital and traditional strategies to a range of communication needs. According to Arthur Coren, Dean of Kwantlen’s School of Business, the new program is designed to serve the needs of employers in British Columbia and the rest of Canada. Taking the recent global acquisition of social media into consideration, the degree has been designed to address the growing use of digital marketing through new media platforms, social media networks, as well as web site optimization.

During fourth year, students will gain relevant work experience doing client-based projects in a marketing practicum. And because Kwantlen is Western Canada’s second largest business school, this four-year program will be a much anticipated, and needed, addition to the already accomplished, Kwantlen business portfolio.
