Heritage Christmas returns to Burnaby Village Museum for another year
The museum will be open everyday until Jan. 3 with free festive activities for all ages
Heritage Christmas at Burnaby Village Museum is back this year with a wide range of local food vendors, carousel rides, sports-themed games, a scavenger hunt, carol singers, and more.
The 1920s-themed village will be decked out in Christmas lights, transforming it into a winter wonderland until Jan. 3, open daily from 1:00 to 9:00 pm.
The event has been taking place for over 50 years, with a range of activities attendees can come and enjoy, says Kate Petrusa, assistant curator at the Burnaby Village Museum.
“I think the coolest things to be excited about [are the] heritage displays of artifacts and just how decked out the site is with fresh, real greenery and really great lights.”
Admission to the museum, which will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25, is free. Petrusa says free admission allows families to enjoy the family-friendly and lively event.
Exhibits and activities will be centred around the new theme of “sports and games.” There will also be a scavenger hunt, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the site with a goal, Petrusa says.
She adds that seasonal entertainment is a big highlight of the event, which will feature carol singers, roving entertainers, and Father Christmas.
Attendees can visit Mai’s Café, a restaurant on site, for hot dogs, pizza, coffee, and more, or visit the Cravings Kettle Corn food truck.
“It’s such a fun thing to do and see all the lights,” Petrusa says. We get lots and lots of people, into the thousands, so it’s a very lively atmosphere if that’s what you’re looking for [during] Christmastime.”
She adds that the event offers “a little something for everyone.”
The event has limited parking in front of the museum, and attendants are there to help on busy nights, Petrusa says. Attendees can also find parking at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, which is on the other side of the museum.
She encourages people to use transit to avoid challenges due to limited parking.
“[Dec. 23] is often the busiest day, but we’re also very busy on Boxing Day and until the New Year,” Petrusa says.
