Kwantlen students waiting in line to attend a contentious meeting to oust student association officials were pepper sprayed in the hallway of the Cedar Building on Surrey campus, according to eyewitness accounts.
Kwantlen Student Association Langley director Jennifer Campbell was in the gym when the incident occurred.
“We were in the process of getting the meeting started and a fire alarm was pulled,” said Campbell. “We just got reports that a number of students who were waiting in line to register to come into the meeting got sprayed with either pepper spray or bear spray.”
Students were then forced to evacuate the building after the fire alarm was pulled.
Surrey firefighters and RCMP are currently on the scene.
According to one university official, the building must first be cleared by the fire department, before students can reenter.
