It’s that time of year when the temperatures drop and all of the non-snowbirds begin to really long for warmer days. Not to mention, it’s the beginning of second semester and in a couple of weeks the majority of the student body, snow-lovers or not, will be wanting a vacation.
There are the typical getaway destinations, like Mexico, that are somewhat affordable and cater to the typical student’s needs: food, alcohol, hot weather and plenty of places to party.
But if you’re looking to take a trip this year that’s a little more unique, look into one of the following “happening” places for 2011.
It may not be the first place you think of to visit (or the second, third or 20th), but it was named a culture capital for 2011; Tallinn, Estonia should appeal to a number of vacationers. The capital city has numerous events planned throughout the year to celebrate its title, and it’s located right on the Gulf of Finland if you get tired of all the culture.
London is not at all an unusual place to visit, with tons of shopping, restaurants and shows to indulge in. This Spring is Prince William’s wedding, another reason to travel overseas if you’re into the whole “royal” thing.
Turku is the second European Capital of Culture for 2011. If you’re looking to experience something different, this year is the time to travel to the oldest city in Finland. If you plan on travelling after this semester, you can check out its Medieval Market, which runs during the summer.
The United Nations announced that 2011 is the International Year of Forests to raise awareness about forest conservation and sustainability. Countries all over the world will be hosting various conventions and events to show their support, including Bulgaria, China, South Africa and Kazakhstan. This might also be the year to travel to places like Brazil or Peru to discover both flora and fauna.
You could also just stay in B.C. and hug a tree.
