The Kwantlen Japan club raised almost $1,000 for the Red Cross’ relief efforts in Japan last week.
Christopher Girodat, club president of Nihon Kwantlen Kurabu, said the group collected $969.17 over two days of fundraising. The club created personalised name badges written in Japanese characters for donations.
According to club member Breena Kaye, a first year Fine Arts student, the group was started in September to encourage Kwantlen to offer more language courses.
“We want to raise awareness because the language programs at Kwantlen are scarce,” said Kaye. “But we also really love Japan; the culture, the food, the anime.”
Girodat says he plans to ask both the Kwantlen Student Association and the university to match the funds his group has raised.
