Every time the Kwantlen Student Association holds an election, candidates campaign to win voters over. There are three general categories of roles on the KSA Council — faculty representatives, campus representatives, and constituency representatives — with various more specific positions under each umbrella.

Campaigners were interviewed during the all-candidates meeting, which is held before every election. Although the KSA Chief Returning Officer Ron Laufer asks all of the candidates to attend each year, there are always some who don’t. As a result, The Runner was unable to interview absentees before press time.

These individuals include four arts representatives (Charah Koushal, Harmandeep Kaur, Moulick Sharma, and Armanjeet Singh), four business representatives (Meghna Arora, Jasdeep Khatra, Druv Shahi, and Ravinder Pal Singh), three science and horticulture representatives (Sakshi Ahuja, Armandeep Kaur, and Prabjot Singh Maan), and one Civic Plaza representative (Bhateja Anshdha).

Mayur Gupta is the current VP Finance and Operations. His meeting attendance record for 2019-2020 is: Present: 9 Late: 0 Absent: 2.

Dhruv Shahi is the current VP Student Life. His meeting attendance record for 2019-2020 is: Present: 10 Late: 1 Absent: 0.

Vacant positions include representatives for the design faculty, health faculty, trades and technology faculty, academic and career advancement faculty, the Indigenous students representative, and the students with disabilities representative.

Any candidates who would like to be interviewed for inclusion in the web version of this article can email editor@runnermag.ca and managing@runnermag.ca to arrange a meeting.

Editor’s note: The following interviews have been edited for length and clarity.

Faculty Representatives

Yashasvi Krishnan

Major: Journalism

Position: Arts Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I’m in my first semester. I have just come, and I’m an international student, and I didn’t see anyone from first semester running for arts rep or any of the positions over there, so I really want to motivate [people] who come here as international students for their first semester. I’m running for arts rep because I think I’m the only journalism student running for it, and I really want to help all the journalism and communication students more, and as a whole, all arts students.

Why should students vote for you?

I’m a new student, so there are things that I face, and I know what people go through during their first semesters. Coming to the journalism pod, KPU has fewer journalism students over here, journalism and communications, so I really want those people to be upfront and come and speak whatever they feel like, because in journalism, what do you do? You go and talk to people.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

KPU hasn’t been doing stuff for the journalism department because of fewer students, so I’m going to promote that we could do more journalism things, plus taking into consideration all the general sciences and whatever they want. I’ll make it possible if I can.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I’m staying here for four years, so I can bring change from starting to the time that I leave. It’s a very long time to stay. This sort of thing will help with my accountability.

Sukhpreet Kaur

Major: General Studies

Position: Arts Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I want to help the students who are in the arts. I want to give them more things to know, that there [are] things that we can do in the arts, so they feel inspired and motivated.

Why should students vote for you?

I want to help the students. That’s why, and because the new students and even the old, once they feel like, ‘Yes, I don’t know about this thing in the arts,” I want to motivate them as much as I can.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

There are so many things students know already, but at some point, they will feel like, “No, we need help,” so I want to work on that.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I will attend all of the meetings that will be held so that I could change the things I think are not good.

Paramjit Singh

Major: Arts

Position: Arts Representative

2019-2020 Meeting Attendance Record: Present: 2 Late: 2 Absent: 9

Why are you running for this position?

I just want to have some fun with the election. I know that is a very enjoyable movement, and … I also want to do something for the students. I want to organize some of the events.

Why should students vote for you?

Five people are standing in my position and there are only three seats, so I will try my best to get support from every student. Moreover, I was a Langley Representative. I just want to get more support.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I would be very happy if I win the election and I will organize more and more events …. My parents will be proud of me if I win the election because I am an international student here and it’s a big thing here.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

Yeah, it’s very important to attend meetings. Honestly, I wasn’t that much interested in attending meetings. But yeah, I attend some of the meetings because I want to show my perspective.

Jasmeen Kaur

Major: Business

Position: Business Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I have seen a lot of students [who] want to get involved in events that are held for business, but they don’t get opportunities to do that, so I want to go one-by-one with every problem, go through all the issues they have, and solve it.

Why should students vote for you?

It’s been a year that I’ve been doing business and I have a lot of knowledge about everything. I’m usually very active in college so I’ll be available when people need me.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

A lot of people are not aware of the events that are happening in our college. They don’t pay attention to what’s going on in the campus. I want to help them get involved so that it gives them a path to go ahead.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

If I’m elected, my first point would be that I’m available to people who need me. Every single time they need me, I’m available for them, and just hear what they want to say, go through their problems, and report it to council.

Harmandeep Maan

Major: Computer Information Systems

Position: Business Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I have seen that most events are organized for arts and all that stuff, and I would like to organize some events for the business students, especially for IT students. We should have some events regarding marketing and we should bring awareness about business in the university.

Why should students vote for you?

I can understand the problems. I’ve been here the last five semesters and I’ve been working in the KSA for a while. I know what their rules and regulations are, what we can do for them, but students are not aware of what the KSA is supposed to do.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I would like to bring awareness about what the KSA is for, what we can do for [students].

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I’m already starting business, so I’m basically studying in their class. I’m friends with them. They can easily talk to me. I’m always open and available for conversations. I’m always available near the university.

Kiranjeet Kaur SidhuKiranjeet Kaur Sidhu.

Major: Business

Position: Business Representative

Why are you running for this position?
I want to help the students because I faced many difficulties in my previous semesters, so I don’t want others to face these problems during their courses. They don’t get the courses when they try to register and they have to take some semesters off or [get] into general studies. I want to help them by telling the KSA to open more courses for them so they can get the seats and not face any problems while getting courses.

Why should students vote for you?
I’m more friendly towards everyone, and more of these students know me. I helped many students in my past semesters, so I’ll help you, and I know they’ll vote for me.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?
Sidhu indicated they felt they answered this question in other responses available here.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?
I know the problems of the students, and I’ll inform the KSA so those problems will be solved. I want to help them in any kind of situation, whether there’s any structure problems or course problems, so they can get solutions to that problem.

Sukhmandeep Singh Gill

Major: Business

Position: Business Representative

Why are you running for this position?
I just want to help the newcomers. I am also an international student, and there are lots of those who come over here and they don’t know the criteria of study. Like, they don’t know how to do assignments at all, so I want to help them.

Why should students vote for you?
I think in my past also, I just met my juniors and I helped them. For the time [being], I want to help with some position.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?
I want to help organize some classes for the [international] students.

If elected, how will you remain accountable to your constituency?
I will be a normal person and [try to] meet every single person.

Gurpreet Nahal

Major: Business

Position: Business Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I want to make student life better on campus. Mostly, people go home after their classes, and there isn’t really a connection with the school.

Why should students vote for you?

I feel like the rest of the people, they get the position, and it’s their last semester or something like that, and they don’t want to do anything. They do it for the name and that’s it. I believe I can do it because I have another two years.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

[Events like] gaming, karaoke, like we did last time, like parties. UBC and SFU have a party each year, and we don’t really have that here. Everyone can get along, do something like a potluck.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

Anyone can come up to me and ask for anything, and if I can’t do [something], I’ll straight up tell you, “There are rules, but if it’s possible, I’ll do my best.”

Kunal Puri

Major: Business

Position: Business Representative

Why are you running for this position?

From my personal experience I have seen that new students often select the wrong courses. I want to help new students transition properly into university life.

Why should students vote for you?

I have studied at KPU for two years so I know how the system works here. I can help students with my experience.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

There are very few opportunities for co-op positions on campus and I want to connect students to these positions. No one even knows about them. I will organise events where students who have participated in the co-ops can show new students how to get into them.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

If I win, I will show them. I will organize new events. I will go personally to them and make myself available through phone and email so they can access me for help.

Simranjit Grover

Major: Business Management

Position: Business Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I have observed that a lot of students don’t know about the KSA and what they have. A lot of students pay fees to the KSA and don’t know the services they have access to, like counselling and U-Pass. Some people don’t even know they have insurance. They’re just paying their fees and don’t know how to utilise these expenses.

Why should students vote for you?

I will create awareness amongst students about the KSA and about other things students care about.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

One reason I’m running is because a lot of times the KSA offices are supposed to be open when they are not. I’ve seen the office closed at 3:00 pm when office hours state they are open until 4:00 pm. I will make sure the offices are open to students and increase the working hours of the office, including on Saturdays because a lot of time students need assistance and there are no services on that day.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I will make students aware of the KSA and insurance. I will meet with students and provide help in any way that I can.

Sara Saif

Major: Entrepreneurial Leadership

Position: Business Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I’m taking business and it’s related to my major. I want to have experience in the major I’m taking. I want to make a difference here. I’m here in Canada for one year. I’ve visited UBC and SFU and I felt a difference between there and here. I want to create a social life on our campuses, especially amongst the business students. I want to hold events for them. I’m taking business courses now, and the only thing I do at university is take class and then head home. There’s nothing to do on the campus to have fun or get to know students. So I really want to do something different.

Why should students vote for you?

I’m new here. The other students may have friends. A lot of students know them but because I’m new, I have this energy to do something different. If you start something and you are new in this thing, you have the energy to do it in a better way.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I want to make more events, to help students have a social life on campus.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

If students elect me, I will do my best to show them I am trustworthy through my actions in the KSA.

Samandeep Kaur Sandhu

Major: Science and Horticulture

Position: Science and Horticulture Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I want to experience more. I want to do something for the student’s union, for the ones who are new. I want to make them more clear about the problems or difficulties they are facing in the university regarding their studies. I want to tell them about the learning centre and I want to make them feel comfortable.

Why should students vote for you?

I think I’m capable of this position, and moreover, I will be very helpful to them in the future.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I am going to share more about my views. I will have a personal discussion, personal meetings if they are free for me.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I will be on time for the meetings and be clear about the meetings and I regularly check them up.

Ripunjot Kaur Brar

Major: Biology

Position: Science and Horticulture Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I’m passionate. I want to do something for science and horticulture for sure. This is a great opportunity to study in the university, right?

Why should students vote for you?

I’m passionate. I can convince students, and I can help them. Most of the time, what I experience, students who come to this university, especially international students, take science and horticulture and move towards general sciences or business. I want to stop this thing. If students want to do science, I will encourage them.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

If we look around at SFU and UBC, the students are doing a lot. They’re doing research and doing their university proud. I want to do something like that.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I’m here almost five [days per week] at the university. I’m well-known on social media, so people can contact me pretty easily for any problem.

Sakshi Ahuja

Major: Biology

Position: Science and Horticulture Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I am new to the campus and my main motive is to make new friends and help them the best way I can.

Why should students vote for you?

I am new to the campus, like many other students. I can relate to them better than the other students who already study here and I can understand them better and help them out better.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I will try 100 per cent to be the best representative the university has ever had. My main focus will be on telling people about the benefits they have.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I go to university like, five times a week so I dont think it will be a problem for me to attend the meetings and be punctual. I have many friends and I am very friendly. I can make people comfortable with me.

Campus Representatives

Jeremy Law

Major: Computer Aided Drafting and Design

Position: Tech Campus Representative

2019-2020 Meeting Attendance Record: Present: 7 Late: 2 Absent: 1

Why are you running for this position?

I think being the representative [last year], it just kind of made me even more passionate. Also, it’s just a great way to get more involved, to kind of put that passion into a way where it’s not wasted.

Why should students vote for you?

I think that I am just really passionate about what I do and I really love just speaking to students because I think everyone has a voice, especially on the Tech campus, when a lot of times people are so busy that some they feel like they are left out of a lot of things that the KSA is doing. I just really want to connect with those people again.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I want a lot more student life at the Tech campus because there [are] so [many] people who are like, so excited about having something that they can go to outside of school.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

My email will always be open, you know? I am willing to speak with anyone if they want to, just like keeping the door open, being more personable. You can actually approach me.

Nikhil Grover

Major: Business

Position: Surrey Campus Representative

Why are you running for this position?

Enhancing campus life. I am seeing multicultural people — someone is sitting there, someone is sitting there, getting them together. I am also running a bhangra dance club, just more communities coming. I want to make them together. I want to make them better.

Why should students vote for you?

If they need a change, I am going to make that change.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

People are not participating in each and every event …. They are not actually aware of the things that are going on. I want to make them aware.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I have already started … running a bhangra club at the KSA. I like calling people from different races, different cultures to get involved in this.

Palwinder Singh

Major: Undeclared

Position: Surrey Campus Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I have been here for more than one year on this campus. Last time nobody [knew] the last Surrey representative. It was his last semester I think and he stood in this election and he never showed up. I am mostly active on campus because I live [near] here.

Why should students vote for you?

Because I don’t want anyone [to experience] what happened to me in the past when I was new here on this campus. I had no friends. No one was here to tell me anything. I want to let new students [know about] the facilities that we are providing on the campus.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I want to help new students. I don’t want anyone to be in the position that I was in when I was new here. I will organize new events, like new programs …. If they need any kind of help, I will be there.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I will be here. The main thing is I want to help someone. I even helped the new [students] from orientation. I helped them [understand] what they can do and the best services we are providing.

Dilraj Virk

Major: General Arts

Position: Richmond Campus Rep

Why are you running for this position?

I’m running for this position because I have earlier classes in Richmond, and I see that there’s not much to do there. On Surrey campus, it’s very fun and enjoyable, but it’s not there.
Surrey has more events. I think once a week we have some event [in Surrey], but not in Richmond. There are not enough there. Whenever I go to Richmond, it’s very silent, and I can’t even see people in some places.

Why should students vote for you?

I think students should vote for me because they can have fun and [quality] as well, because it’s not only for studies. There should be some other activities as well. Maybe I can help with that.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

Note: Virk felt he already answered this question in the above responses.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I am mostly two or three days there, and if anyone has some problems or suggestions on what we can do, they can contact me by mail or meet me in person.

Aaradhaya Mahendru

Major: Political Science

Position: Civic Plaza Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I’m new to KPU, and I want to experience all that will happen in these elections so next time I can work hard. I want to create changes and awareness in certain issues like environment and sexual education and abuse. Being a political science student, I’m really into social movements and being involved in them. I started my own club, the United Nations Club. We work towards society and the environment. I want to create awareness. I want to expand the Steve Nash pass to other clubs, like Planet Fitness or Club 16, because I’ve talked to students who complain they don’t go to Steve Nash.

Why should students vote for you?

I’m a new student. I’m focusing on my main goal, environment and sex-ed and creating awareness. Other candidates are focused on just winning the election.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I want to expand the pass to other clubs and bring changes to books, like more variety.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I will work hard. I’ve taken on other leadership [roles] like president of the U.N. Club, held my own conferences and fulfilled my own promises.

Bhumi Patel

Major: Technical Management and Services

Position: Civic Plaza Representative

Why are you running for this position?

Civic Plaza is a new campus, but people there don’t know what KSA has to offer. When I was a new student, I didn’t know what the KSA was. I want to make them aware there is an association that looks out for students and for them to know there are opportunities and events associated with KPU within the KSA.

Why should students vote for you?

I’m a volunteer with KPU and an active member of the KSA and go to most of their events. People need to know what is going on at the KSA and their events.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

Firstly, I want a KSA information desk at Civic Plaza. Students have no idea they are paying for such a great opportunity. People need to know there is an amazing experience there.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I will keep up with my work and goals. I will be honest with the students and respond to students’ inquiries and questions. I’ll highlight the good things.

Constituency Representatives

Gurdial Singh Dhindsa

Major: Business Management

Position: International Students Representative

2019-2020 Meeting Attendance Record: Present: 5 Late: 0 Absent: 6

Why are you running for this position?

I am an international student so I have always liked to connect with people, and I feel like the international students who came from India, they don’t know much about Canada, right? Even from different countries like China and other countries, so I just want to be a helping hand for them.

Why should students vote for you?

Because I will be a helping hand …. I have been here for the last two years so I know pretty much everything. I will just educate them regarding this and I will organize the events they want … like the traditional things they have back home in their own countries, so I will just try to make them feel at home.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I will just start working on my goals. The day I get elected I will start working on it. Even if I don’t get elected, I’m still working.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I will make my schedule according to the meetings and stuff, so I will try to attend the meetings.

Romanpreet (No last name given)

Major: Health

Position: International Students Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I’ve been with the KSA for a while. I’ve volunteered with them and I have won their excellence award. Now I want to move forward. I want to use all my experience for the betterment of students. I love to help people in whichever way I can. I have observed in two years that people are filling positions but not doing anything. There are so many opportunities to do things for students but nothing is happening. So, I just want to be that change for the students.

Why should students vote for you?

I am a student myself. I know what students are dealing with and how to overcome those things, so vote for me. I will carry your voice forward.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I would like to gather information for services available to students that are not being used, like scholarships and food banks. Nobody knows about them because no one is reaching out to students to let them know what they have access to. There are things we can get together and rally for, like we did in the past with the U-Pass. There are things we can protest against, like the MSP rate increase for International students. I have that information and I have the guts to go forward and lead a team.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

Most students across the campus know me. I have been a START volunteer for two years and even won an award for that. People know me and my track record shows that you can trust me.

Sharanveer Singh

Major: Business Management

Position: International Students Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I’m an international student here in Canada. It’s my second year here in KPU, so I know most of the issues faced by international students. I’ll try to work on that so that they shouldn’t face any issues working here in Canada.

Why should students vote for you?

Students should vote for change. The representative last year didn’t make out very good, so to get some improvements and get some more events and workshops for the betterment of international students at KPU, they should vote for change.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

Some of those issues are when students come to Canada, they feel homesick. They should have some workshops and some events to [make friends with] other students. Another one is they could have issues with money financing. They don’t know how to handle their finances or take care of those, so we should have some workshops for that.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

If I get elected, as an international student, I’m at KPU most of the time for my classes and assignments and all, so they can reach me here on campus or they can contact me with my phone number or email or whatever they’d like to do.

Abhay Singh Cheema

Major: General Studies

Position: Mature Students Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for this position as I have to bring change. If students have problems, they don’t know how to reach out to someone to discuss their problem. They can trust in me, so I will be there for them.

Why should students vote for you?

I am here to bring change. Last year, some representatives made some promises, so I will try to bring a change to the KSA.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

If I am elected I will be doing some events so that students may interact with each other or socialize.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I will be [at KPU] five days a week and I will be roaming around the university, so students can reach me if they have some issues.

Gaurav Sethi

Major: Arts (diploma)

Position: Mature Students Representative

Why are you running for this position?

No one is coming in to represent the mature students within the university. I have experience from my home country and ran school elections there. I’ve been entrusted to run school elections, so I was interested in trying for this position.

Why should students vote for you?

I’ll be their voice in front of everyone. I’ll do things [for] them, and I think I’ll be a good representative.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I want to have more mature students come in front. It’s my second year at KPU and I haven’t seen any events for the mature students. I want to have events for them to have fun too.

If elected, how will you be held accountable?

I’ll be on campus every weekday. They can come talk to me and I’ll take their voice to meetings.

Marika Wagner

Major: Sciences

Position: Queer Students Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I strive to help with all the queer student body of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. For the queer representative — I really think it should be amended to the LGBT representative. Whether it’s the younger generation or the older generation, not everybody comes right [out] and says, “I’m queer.”

Why should students vote for you?

I have two years with the Canadian Federation of Students and three years [with the] Chief Council for the Native Education College. I’ve gone all across Canada with the Aboriginal Caucus, beginning from ’95 to ’98. I was the Aboriginal liaison for Local 51. And I have a tremendous amount of experience dealing with the LGBT and Vision Vancouver, with former mayor Gregor Robertson.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

To have all of our LGBTQ … students able to come to me for help, support, especially emotional needs. Put an end to the hatred for LGBT [people], especially towards transgender people. There’s always going to be a stigma towards trans people. [People] don’t understand trans people, so they stereotype people, and it’s really quite a shame.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

[By being there] for the students and the office at all times possible. I’ll think of nice functions for the constituency to do, have all of the students’ input on ideas of what [they] would like to do, and get involved with the co-op and support for Pride.

Fleur Dias

Major: Creative Writing

Position: Queer Students Representative

Why are you running for this position?

It’s my first semester here and I haven’t noticed a lot of representation on campus. I just want to be a part of that. I want to work towards that, just be someone [students] can approach.

Why should students vote for you?

I think students should vote for me because I’m approachable. I’m likable, I think. I want to be able to represent everyone and anyone in whatever way that I can.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I just hope that I can create a safe space for everyone so they can feel free to be themselves regardless of how they identify.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I think I’m just going to try and do my best — whatever I can in whatever way that I can.

Bhavkiran Aujla

Major: Business

Position: Students of Colour Representative

2019-2020 Meeting Attendance Record: Present: 9 Late: 0 Absent: 2

Why are you running for this position?

I want to be the voice for the students of my constituency.

Why should students vote for you?

I have a year’s experience. I don’t have to start over. I know what the KSA does. I’m already at the door ready to go.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

We didn’t have many students come to us last year. I want to help students come out and talk to me and the KSA. I want to try approaching students this time.

If elected, how will you be held accountable?

I’ll be responsible, be there for my constituency, be open to answering their questions and concerns, and I won’t be scared.

Dhanwant Singh

Major: Business Management

Position: Students of Colour Representative

Why are you running for this position?

I’m running for this position so that I can engage everyone in events which are organized by the KSA, so that everyone has the chance to meet new people.

Why should students vote for you?

The person who was a representative for students of colour, nobody knows him. I don’t even know who was the [representative] last time, so this time I want to be somebody who is there to help out.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

People usually don’t come to events when they’re organized by the KSA, so I want to be an image that everyone knows.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

I’m here four days a week, so I will always be available to the students whenever they need me. I’ll always be helpful to them however I can, whatever I can give them, and always be supportive for them. All kinds of people, all colours.

Last year, I was running for business representative and once, during my actual campaign, I saw many problems during orientation, and many girls were facing problems in the college. I just want to run so that students feel free to talk to me, especially girls.

Why should students vote for you?

I have the skills to stand for them. I have the leadership qualities. I always stand for women, and I always try to help. I hope students will understand and they’ll vote for me.

If elected, what would you like to accomplish?

I just want to try to talk to the KSA and give class presentations. In orientation, we have information regarding [sexual assault], but they are not very aware of all those things because they’re not listening properly. I just want to give a class presentation so that girls know about their rights and everything.

If elected, how will you remain accountable?

The basic thing for me is orientation. I’m an orientation leader as well, so I usually meet new students every time. I just want to make sure that, every orientation, I provide [all the] information.
