Debate: Tim Hortons is the best bang for your buck

My wallet greatly appreciates the budgeted coffee and donuts

A common debate among post-secondary students is if Tim Hortons is better than Starbucks, but the answer is Tim’s.

This is a debate that results from preference, and while I’m a firm believer both have their pros and cons for different occasions and moods, Tim Hortons brings positive memories and true feelings of being Canadian.

Sure, Starbucks is great with their famous seasonal drinks, scrumptious pastries and sandwiches, and cute merchandise, but Tim Hortons takes the cake for its affordability, overall experience, and the nostalgia associated with this coffee shop.

It is no surprise that Tim Hortons destroys Starbucks in the affordability section. I love a good Chai Latte, but at this point in this extremely expensive world, I do not feel like paying $5 for a medium sized drink. I could get it somewhere else for cheaper.

At Tim Hortons, the drop in price means you only have to pay about $2 for a similar sized beverage. My student budget thanks me every time I opt to grab a coffee and two food items for the equivalent of one Starbucks drink. Tim Hortons is really the way to go to save your cash and put it to use somewhere else.

Tim Hortons also wins over Starbucks due to the overall experience of purchasing and swift drive-thrus. I can’t think of a single Starbucks that has a fast drive thru. In a hurry, Timmies is your friend.

The atmosphere Tim Hortons holds is way better for hanging out with friends or studying. While Starbucks is the trendy spot, they have limited seating in all their locations. Tim Hortons is more spacious and doesn’t get as crowded. You can camp out in the corner to drink your French Vanilla and do some homework, or meet up with friends to share some TimBits.

There are memories and nostalgia at Tim Hortons too. Whether you grew up in Canada, are new to the country, or just visiting, Tim Hortons is a staple to the Canadian experience. After all, the coffee shop is named after a Canadian Toronto Maple Leafs hockey player.

Everyone knows the rich coffee smell and aroma of sweet pastries lingering in the air as you walk in. I remember going there every morning before school for my parents to grab their coffees. The rich smell wafted through the car and warmed me up before starting my day.

It’s one of the many fond memories linked to this coffee shop, and I’m sure others share that as well. Tim Hortons leaves a special impact on Canadians and their individual coffee experiences.

You can find a Starbucks or Tim Hortons almost anywhere in the world, but Tim Hortons gives that sense of Canadian culture and history. There is something special about a coffee shop created by Canadians.
