News Brief: Upcoming June events around Metro Vancouver
Summer is almost here and with the warm weather, more events are just around the corner for students to relax during their semester break before the fall or looking for an event to attend on the weekend to escape the pile of assignments starting to loom. Many events are happening next month to get you in the sun and the community.
At Kwantlen Polytechnic University, the Health Promotion and Sports & Recreation departments are holding National Health & Fitness Day where students participate in outdoor games like ping-pong, minute to win it challenges, fitness stations, giant chess, and more. The event will take place on June 1 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Surrey main courtyard.
The Surrey Art Gallery is hosting its free Thursday Artist Talk event on June 1 from 7:30 to 9:00 pm featuring Aaron S Moran, a Maple Ridge based artist who makes sculptures, public artworks, and is a photographer. Moran’s work touches on themes of sustainability, environment, and urban development. Those interested can email artgallery@surrey.ca for more information on how to attend.
KPU’s Peer Resilience Program is also hosting a workshop on healthy behaviors and nature on June 6 in room 1340 at the Richmond campus from 12:00 to 1:30 pm. This is one of the three free workshops they are hosting to help students improve their health and wellbeing. Students can email studenthealth@kpu.ca for more information.
Near Surrey Central, the Pride in Surrey event will take place on June 10 from 1:00 to 9:00 pm featuring a digital exhibit of collections documenting the history of Sher Vancouver. There will also be a screening of the film Emergence: Out of the Shadows with a panel discussion afterwards with filmmakers and cast. To end the night, there will be The Rainbow Flame Pride Storytelling event. Tickets can be purchased on the Surrey Civic Theatre’s website.
If you want to do some local shopping this month, the Clayton Community Market has returned this year at the Clayton Community Centre and will have vendors from many local businesses to choose from in addition to food trucks. The market will be held on June 11 and 25 from 10:00 to 3:00 pm and attendance is free.
For arts and crafts, KPU International is collaborating with Mosaic Art Studio in New Westminster to hold a Turkish lamp workshop for attendees to build the best lamp they can make out of hand-cut glass and different shaped beads. The workshop will take place on June 12 from 1:30 to 4:30 pm and KPU students get a discount of $15.75. Those interested can purchase a ticket through the Eventbrite page.
The Queer Arts Festival will take place from June 17 to 28 hosting many events ranging from exhibits and panels with this year’s theme “Queers in Space” at various art galleries in Vancouver such as Roundhouse Community Centre, SUM Gallery, James Black Gallery, and VAG North Plaza. The festival has been running since 1998 and is presented by the Pride in Art Society (PiA). The festival pass is $69.00, but tickets for individual events can be purchased through the festival’s Eventbrite page.
