Five songs to help you get into the mood for summer
Add these songs to your playlist this season
Summer is almost here, which means it’s time to pull out the Bluetooth speaker while soaking up the sun. Now is the time to start making the perfect summer playlist to impress your family and friends, so here are some options to choose from.
Whether you’re at a barbecue gathering or working on that tan at your local beach, these songs will make summer much more fun. Even if you are working full-time or taking summer classes, these songs will whisk you into a calming, sunny retreat, at least for a few minutes. So just sit back, relax, and listen to these cool tunes.
“Desafinado” – Stan Getz and João Gilberto
I am starting off with the genre, Bossa Nova, a summer essential and key to creating the perfect sunny weather playlist. This song will make you feel like you’re relaxing in a fancy spa, especially when the saxophonist begins to play. The chords and vocals are the perfect background music for an evening walk or a family dinner in the backyard. For a similar vibe, listen to “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars.”
“Island in the Sun” – Weezer
This song will take you back to the early 2000s with a wave of nostalgia. Unlike a lot of Weezer’s songs, this one is mellow while still containing their famous guitar choruses and pop rock sequences. Listen to this during those wet and rainy Vancouver summer days, when your mood needs some uplifting.
“Summer Nights” – from the movie musical Grease
Is it really summer without the movie Grease? Love or hate the movie, this song by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John is an absolute banger and somehow everyone knows at least a few of the lyrics. It’s great to sing out loud with friends, especially with the verses. Newton John’s voice is also perfect for the role of Sandy. Blast this one in the car during a road trip with friends or at a beach party.
“Sunny” – Boney M
I came across this song recently and have been listening to it on repeat so far this month. It’s an instant mood booster and you’ll be singing along before the song is over. The simple lyrics and addictive chorus make it easy to bop to. There are multiple versions of this song, as it was originally written and performed by Bobby Hebb in the early 1960s. Cher also sang a version of “Sunny” in 1966, but I prefer the 1976 German-Caribbean vocal group Boney M’s version because of its fast pace and disco era vibes. Listen to this one while dancing at a pool party or sitting outside with a refreshing drink.
“Kokomo” – The Beach Boys
The Beach Boys have always been a staple to summer in my household, and I picked one of their classic songs for this list. This is a great song to listen to at the beach or when taking a break from studying for an upcoming midterm. It is also the type of song to listen to on repeat until September.
Hopefully these songs can help you stay cool in the heat and make you feel that summer vibe as the season isn’t here for long. To listen to each song, head to my playlist at https://spoti.fi/3MXk9UW.
