News Brief: Check out these community events taking place next month
With the fall semester well underway, here’s some events taking place around Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s campuses next month to get involved with the community and escape your course work.
Various events are taking place in Surrey throughout October, one of which is the Clayton Community Market. This free, community-hosted event is set to take place from Oct. 1 to 15 starting at 10:00 am until 3:00 pm at the Clayton Community Centre, and will feature food trucks, shopping vendors, and family-friendly activities. There will also be a pie baking contest with market cash prizes on Oct.1. Visit www.collectivecraftmarkets.com to register for the contest.
In Fort Langley the 28th annual Cranberry Festival is taking place on Oct. 7. This non-profit based, grassroots event celebrates and recognizes the cranberry’s role in Fort Langley’s history while supporting local businesses and vendors. It also has an annual attendance of around 35,000 people. The festival will run along Glover Road from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and will provide opportunities to purchase unique cranberry merchandise.
On Oct. 12, learn about Chinese Canadian History in B.C. with Sarah Ling, exhibition and program manager of the Chinese Canadian Museum. Ling’s one hour, free, virtual talk will explore the long and evolving history of Chinese diaspora in the province and the important contributions Chinese immigrants and their descendants have made in the community. The talk will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, and you can register for the event on the City of Surrey’s website.
If you’re looking to partake in an activity festive in the spirit of Halloween, Historic Stewart Farm will be hosting “Silent Film Club: Fright Night” on Oct. 13 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, a screening of classic horror movies. Attendees can expect to watch The Dragon Painter, A Night on Bald Mountain, and Mercy the Mummy Mumbled, and tickets are $12.05 with popcorn included.
Also in the spirit of Halloween is “Haunted Sea” at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site in Richmond, a seasonal installation that explores the local coastal waters that are being “haunted” by plastic pollution. The installation will be open daily from Oct. 2 to Nov. 5. Regular admission rates apply with youth 17 years and under free.
Another event taking place in Richmond is the Steveston Vintage Fair at the Steveston Town Square Park beside the museum and post office. Every Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, the fair will feature stalls with unique finds from various eras and opportunities to learn the stories behind vendors’ curated collections.
If you’re still wanting to hang onto the last bits of summer vibes, breweries in Langley are hosting live music performances throughout October. Dead Frog Brewery has live music every Sunday from 2:30 to 6:00 pm in their tasting room. Different musicians are featured each week, and the brewery has over 20 taps of craft beer, locally sourced food, and a dog-friendly patio.
Camp Beer Co also has live music performances set to take place next month. Head to this brewery on Thursdays from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm to catch some tunes while enjoying a flight of their original handcrafted beers or grabbing a bite to eat.
