News Brief: KSA elects new VP finance and operations, appoints new associate president
The Kwantlen Student Association held a council meeting on Sept. 29 at 11:00 am at the Surrey campus in a hybrid format.
Council members Destiny Lang, Usha Gunatilake, Jashandeep Singh, Manraj Grewal, Jasmine Kaur Kochhar, Gurtejpreet Kaur Kaliyan, Amitoj Singh, Gurnoor Kaur, Taranpreet Singh, Jaspreet Shokar, Akashdeep Singh, Asad Husain, Akashdeep Sidhu, Jashanpreet Singh Maan, Nitin Aggarwal, and Amandeep Kaur Brar were in attendance. Abdullah Randhawa, Jashanpreet Sekhon, Mehakdeep Singh, Jobanpreet Singh, and Yugveer Gill were absent.
After a land acknowledgment, council began the election of a new vice-president finance and operations following Jashandeep’s resignation. Aggarwal, Grewal, and Amitoj were nominated for the position. The nominees answered questions council posed about how they would tackle issues both student groups and the KSA are facing, along with their thoughts on fostering a positive school environment.
Council took the nominations to a vote and the majority were in Amitoj’s favour. He was then elected as the KSA’s new VP finance and operations.
“I believe I have all the requirements which are necessary to excel in this position. I possess strong administrative skills, I have two and a half years of experience,” Amitoj said.
“I have demonstrated the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with diverse groups of people. I’m also familiar with the issues the council and the members are facing and how we are committed to working towards finding effective solutions.”
During the social justice committee’s report, Kaur said they’re planning on collaborating with the university affairs committee and student life committee to plan a Halloween event sometime this month.
“We’re gonna combine the Halloween event with a suggestion box from students and a feedback box [to help] plan some activities,” Kaur said.
The KSA also held an executive meeting at 1:00 pm on Sept. 29 where they appointed a new associate president. Amitoj was previously the associate president and was appointed into the position during the July 28 executive meeting.
The associate president is a volunteer position on the executive committee that was created earlier this year. The position requires appointment by the executive committee and nomination of the president. Removal from office is by a resolution of the executive committee. The associate president must be a council member and is required to report to and take direction from the president along with assisting the president in their duties.
Grewal wasn’t present at the meeting, however he was nominated for the position. After a vote, he was appointed as the new associate president.
“I think he is a right fit for the position,” Randhawa said.
“He told me his ideas for KSA, what he thinks about it, and how he can help us to work over here with me.”
The next council and executive meetings are scheduled for Oct. 20 at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm respectively. Students can email info@kusa.ca to join the meeting.
