As Hollywood is on the verge of recovering from its pandemic woes, the industry faced both a Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike, causing production delays and shifting big release dates. However, we are moving past that, and 2024 will be nigh upon us, bringing with it exciting superhero movies, a highly anticipated musical adaptation, action sequels and prequels, and much, much more. These are just a few of my most anticipated releases of 2024.

Mean Girls

Directed by: Arturo Perez Jr., Samantha Jayne
Starring: Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho
Released on: Jan. 12

I am eagerly anticipating watching this film because it offers a fresh take on the iconic Mean Girls narrative, not as a remake of the 2004 comedy, but as an adaptation of the stage musical written by Tina Fey. Having had the privilege of witnessing Reneé Rapp’s captivating performance in concert last year, I can confidently say that her portrayal will infuse the film with the charisma and energy that fans anticipate.

This film is not just a replication but a reinterpretation, making it a must-watch for fans of the original movie and the subsequent stage musical. Ultimately, I am looking forward to being entertained by the stellar cast, Tina Fey’s creative brilliance, and the nostalgic yet contemporary charm that this rendition promises to deliver.

Madame Web

Directed by: S.J. Clarkson
Starring: Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney
Release date: Feb. 14

Dakota Johnson takes on the role of the clairvoyant spidey character (not to be confused with Spider-Gwen!). As the franchise steps into uncharted territory by focusing on characters beyond the iconic Spider-Man himself, Madame Web offers a fresh perspective and an opportunity to delve into the complexities of this enigmatic figure.

Dune: Part Two

Directed by: Denis Villeneuve
Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin
Release date: March 1

The second part of this cinematic odyssey promises to be an even grander spectacle, expanding upon the intricate world-building and character dynamics established in the initial installment. Denis Villeneuve, renowned for his cinematic prowess and ability to breathe life into complex narratives, takes the helm to bring the second half of Frank Herbert’s masterpiece to the silver screen.

Adding to the star-studded ensemble, big names like Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken join the cast, injecting new energy and depth into the narrative. As a fan of the books, and Pugh, I am super excited to see her portrayal of Princess Irulan.

The sequel not only aims to satisfy the fervent fans of the Dune universe, but also seeks to captivate a broader audience with its blend of science fiction, political intrigue, and timeless storytelling.

Deadpool 3

Directed by Shawn Levy
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Leslie Uggams
Release date: July 26

The enigma surrounding Deadpool 3 has ignited a frenzy of speculation and anticipation among fans. One tantalizing piece of information has set the fandom ablaze — the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

The movie is set to unravel its narrative before the heart-wrenching events of Logan, where Wolverine met his poignant demise. The decision to delve into the pre-Logan timeline adds a layer of complexity and curiosity to the storyline, promising a unique perspective on the beloved character.

Joker: Folie à Deux

Directed by Todd Phillips
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson
Release date: Oct. 4

In a surprising turn, a musical follow-up to the R-rated Joker film is set to grace screens, delving into the intricate dance of chaos and affection between the Joker, played by Joaquin Phoenix, and Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga.

Whether you’re lured by comedic espionage or action-packed showdowns, the upcoming films of the year offer a diverse palette catering to every taste. As the reel unfolds, these cinematic creations will transport audiences to uncharted realms, evoke laughter, and provoke profound thought.

The promise of such varied experiences marks 2024 as a year etched in memory for movie enthusiasts. So, mark your calendars, secure your popcorn supply, and brace yourself for an exhilarating journey through the enchanting landscapes of storytelling this year has in store. Get ready to be swept away by the magic that unfolds on the silver screen.
