Pride month is here, and with summer fast approaching, now is the perfect time to expand your reading and watch lists with stories that celebrate and explore the diverse experiences of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

As we celebrate Pride, it’s important to highlight and support media that reflects the multifaceted nature of the 2SLGBTQIA+ experience, offering both representation and relatability to readers and viewers.

Whether you’re looking for gripping novels, compelling movies, or binge-worthy T.V. shows, this curated selection includes powerful and poignant tales of love, identity, and resilience.

Here are some of my recommendations for finding your next favourite book or show.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

As an aging Hollywood icon, Evelyn Hugo recounts her life story and all the drama surrounding her seven marriages to an unknown journalist, revealing her true love and deepest secrets. This is a gripping, glamorous novel with rich character development and an engaging exploration of bisexuality and queer relationships. In a world where humans and the android-like Automae are at odds, Crier, an automated noble, and Ayla, a human rebel, form an unlikely bond that challenges everything they know. The book features a well-crafted, enemies-to-lovers romance and explores the themes of power, rebellion, and identity. It’s available at most bookstores and online retailers like Amazon and Book Depository.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

This expansive novel follows four college friends in New York City, delving deep into their complex relationships, traumas, and personal growth over several decades. Pro tip — clear your schedule because this book will wreck you. It’s a profound, emotionally intense story that portrays the enduring bonds of friendship and love with significant 2SLGBTQIA+ representation. This book is available at most bookstores and online retailers like Amazon and Book Depository.

My Policeman by Bethan Roberts

Movies

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

This French film tells the story of a forbidden affair between an aristocrat and a painter in the late 18th century. It is visually breathtaking, with a slow-burn romance that explores the themes of desire, memory, and art. The film is available to stream on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

Moonlight (2016)

This Oscar-winning film follows the life of Chiron, a young Black man, as he grapples with his identity and sexuality while growing up in a rough Miami neighbourhood. The film’s powerful storytelling, stunning cinematography, and emotional depth make it a poignant exploration of intersectional identities. It’s available on streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

This is a cult classic musical about a newly engaged couple whose car breaks down, leading them to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite scientist. It’s an iconic, flamboyant film that celebrates queer culture and has a massive, enduring fanbase. The film is available on Disney+ and various rental platforms.

T.V. shows

Station 19 (2018-2024)

This Grey’s Anatomy spin-off follows the personal and professional lives of firefighters at Seattle Fire Station 19, featuring significant 2SLGBTQIA+ representation. Aside from the fact that it is my favourite T.V. show, I recommend Station 19 because it combines action, drama, and heartfelt moments with strong representation of queer relationships and identities. It’s available to stream on ABC, Hulu, and Disney+.

One Day at a Time (2017-2020)

This series is a modern reimagining of the classic sitcom that follows a Cuban American family navigating life’s challenges, featuring a significant storyline about a teenage daughter coming out as lesbian. It’s a heartfelt, funny, and socially relevant show that tackles various issues, including 2SLGBTQIA+ topics, with sensitivity and humour. One Day at a Time is available on Netflix and Pop TV.
