Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s faculty of arts is collaborating with the library to host their first ever movie night in the Surrey campus library on June 19 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.

The event will take place in the special collections room on the first floor of the library with snacks and a screening of Avatar: The Way of Water.

“We ordered some goodie bags that we’ll have from Grassroots [Cafe] with chips and juice, … and the library has a popcorn machine that they’ll use to make some fresh popcorn for everyone to enjoy,” says Pearl Tran, communications and events coordinator at KPU.

KPU students had the opportunity to vote for which movie they’d like to be screened, with Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Big Sick, and The Lego Movie as other options. Tran says she picked these movie options herself — each a different genre to fit different audiences.

“Luckily, Instagram has the feature now where you can put a poll on the post. So, that’s how I had students vote for which movie they wanted to watch,” Tran says.

“Surprisingly, when we made the announcement posts, there were over 100 votes on our movie poll, and we didn’t expect that many, so hopefully … a lot of students [will attend].”

Movie nights like this can be a great opportunity to meet new people and spend some time with them outside of class, Tran says.

“I would say students should come out to this event because it’s like a fun de-stressor, maybe from midterms, or even if they don’t have classes and they live nearby, and they want to just come watch a fun movie with their friends.”

Events like movie nights are important for students as university should not only be about studies, but finding a sense of community, Tran says.

“I think at KPU, it’s a little bit harder because we don’t have dorms on campus. It’s a bit of a smaller university,” she says.

“So, [it’s] great if we get more chances to create opportunities for students to just have fun events on campus, have a sense of belonging at KPU, find some friends here, and have a good time.”

The idea to host the movie night initially came from an initiative to create a series of engagement activities for students in the previous school year, Tran says.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t fit [movie night] within that schedule. So, we moved it to summer, but we still wanted to host it and try collaborating with other departments at KPU to build that relationship and also bring students to their departments, too.”
