Too busy for a long break? Check out these local weekend getaway destinations
From Whistler to Chilliwack, British Columbia has many stunning escapes to take in this summer
Home to beaches, mountains, and rainforests, B.C. is one of the most beautiful places. Over my two-and-a-half year journey residing in the province, I’ve had the opportunity to visit a few amazing places, and have a long bucket list of more to explore.
With the warm weather and summer just around the corner, the endless fun of exploring B.C. has just begun. For me, summer is the perfect time to relax with friends at the beach, go on adventures like hikes, or attend concerts.
It’s also a great time to go on a short, weekend getaway to escape the stress of everyday life. To help you pick a place to explore this summer, here are some ideas for fantastic weekend escapes from your busy life.
Whistler
Whistler is one of most visited municipalities in B.C. among locals and tourists, providing both with unforgettable experiences, memories, adventures, and natural beauty.
Known for its skiing and snowboarding activities, Whistler has one of the biggest ski resorts in North America. But the fun goes beyond just winter activities. Whistler welcomes various summer outdoor activities, hosts events, and there’s even a nearby lake called Lost Lake to check out.
The municipality is full of energy on sunny days and has lots of restaurants to eat at. Going to Whistler in the summer is the perfect time to go for a hike through the breathtaking alpine meadows, or mountain bike through forested trails, stroll through the village, and attend live music performances — all activities that are high on my list of things to do.
My brief visit to Whistler in 2021 left me yearning to return. I really want to go on its gondola ride again, which offers an amazing view of the forests and glaciers.
Victoria
Victoria is home to beautiful gardens, historical sites, and natural beauty that captivate your heart and make the trip memorable.
You can get to Victoria by taking a ferry from BC Ferries’ Tsawwassen terminal or by harbour plane. Once you arrive in Victoria, I recommend visiting the provincial parliament buildings first, which are surrounded by lush, majestic gardens. I would then stroll around the town, visiting some brunch cafes and the Royal BC Museum, which exhibits the history of B.C.
I would end my trip by visiting the Inner Harbour for its breathtaking view, live music, and various shows. Renowned for its exquisite landscaping, the Butchart Gardens’ gorgeous flower displays and strolling paths are something I’d also recommend finding time to see.
Chilliwack
I’m excited to visit Chilliwack this year as I enjoy the outdoors and hiking, but also its gorgeous lakes, waterfalls, and hiking routes. Cultus Lake is a go-to summer destination as it offers a wide range of recreational activities like boating, fishing, swimming, and camping.
There’s also many hiking trails in Chilliwack. You can hike through forests and lakeshores with Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park’s hiking trails, providing opportunities for bird watching, and nature photography. The Lindeman Lake trail offers a breathtaking and serene view of the turquoise lake.
In addition to these thrilling yet peaceful hiking locations, I can’t wait to visit Bridal Veil Falls Park, a great place for a family picnic or barbeque while taking in the scenery.
I can’t wait to check off my summer getaway bucket list this year, and hopefully you’ll be able to add some of these destinations to yours.
