Vancouver’s Granville neighbourhood is gearing up for the “Summer Sounds Concert Series: Sunset Edition” on Thursday.

Hosted by the South Granville Business Improvement Association (BIA) at the Vancouver School Board Park, the event will feature a 25-piece orchestra along with a wine garden, giant board games, and food trucks from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

This is the first year the association has offered the series, which was created following a concert organized last year.

“We hosted a very successful surprise concert with a cellist group from Yale University in 2023,” wrote Svenja Mehmke, marketing manager for South Granville BIA, in an email statement to The Runner.

“People were delighted by having the opportunity to listen to classic and contemporary music right in their neighbourhood, so we were looking for a program and group that we could work with to offer more elevated experiences like this.”

For selecting musicians for the concert series, the South Granville BIA formed a connection with the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra (VMO) by sharing similar visions and goals.

The concert portion of the event will take place from [7:00 to 9:00 pm]. With the [sunset] beginning [at] 8:14 pm on that day, we’re hoping for beautiful golden hour vibes and we’ll have lots of LED candles to set the mood of a beautiful summer night,” Mehmke wrote.

The Aug. 22 concert marks the grand finale of a series of concerts that began on June 12. It will be the biggest and longest of the events, Mehmke added.

While the South Granville BIA is already brainstorming ideas for the 2025 summer season, no specific themes have been confirmed yet.

In the years after the pandemic, we hosted a busking program called ‘Summer Sessions’ which offered live music by local artists each summer Thursday on the two plazas,” Mehmke wrote.

The association hopes attendees of the “Summer Sounds Concert Series” feel a connection with the South Granville community and are inspired by the “impressive talent of the VMO and discovering the neighbourhood in new and exciting ways through events like these,” Mehmke wrote.

Mehmke finds events like the concert series play a crucial role in fostering community spirit in South Granville.

“We also want to showcase that we are a beautiful neighborhood in the middle of the city, which has a lot to offer and is welcoming to everyone.”
