Steps to stay cool this summer
From wearing proper clothing to trying out cooling tips, here are seven ways to beat the heat
As the temperature rises while we make our way through summer, finding ways to remain cool becomes the top priority. By taking proper care, you can better manage the summer heat, staying cool and comfortable. Here are some of my tips to combat the hot weather this summer.
1.Stay hydrated and quench your thirst
Keep your water bottles with you at all times and drink plenty of water to keep your body temperature regulated. The amount of water a person needs in a day depends on factors such as their body composition and activity level, according to Healthline. A general goal is to drink more than two litres of water per day.
When in need to quench your thirst, and possibly your sweet tooth, try some refreshing beverages and treats. Drink a smoothie packed with fresh fruits and energizing ingredients to not only stay cool but gain some nutrients. Having a refreshing pop, iced drink, or even a slushie are all ways to feel refreshed and satisfied.
2. Wear light-coloured clothes
It is often recommended to wear light-coloured clothing during hot summer months because light colours reflect most of the light that falls on them. They thus absorb less heat, keeping us cool. Wearing lightweight and loose clothing is also optimal as it helps your body breathe.
3. Use products to protect yourself from the sun
From increasing vitamin D levels to boosting your mood, sunlight can improve your health. However, unprotected exposure can cause serious harm to our skin. To protect your skin from the sun and developing a sunburn, use a sunscreen lotion or spray with an SPF of 30 or higher. It’s also not a bad idea to carry an umbrella with you on very hot days to have shade outdoors. Wearing sunglasses is also vital to protect your face and eyes.
4, Try out some cooling tips and tricks
Consider using damp, cool towels, fans, neck wraps, and cooling pads for your bed to stay comfortable. Even ceiling fans can be particularly effective. This year, BC Hydro is giving out free portable air conditioners for income-qualified households and individuals. The offer includes one portable air-conditioning unit and a one-time installation. To learn more, visit BC Hydro’s website.
Keeping your curtains and blinds closed throughout the day will also help prevent your home from heating up as this helps block out the sun and keep inside temperatures down. Meanwhile, you can keep your windows open to help bring in some fresh air.
5. Eat Light
Oftentimes, heavy meals, such as meat dishes, can increase your body temperature because your metabolic rate rises as you digest food. Therefore, you can opt for light, refreshing meals like salads, wraps, and sandwiches during hot days. Also be sure to eat fruit as a light snack, which is often packed with nutrients and can help contribute to hydration.
6. Stay indoors during peak heat
Beat the heat indoors by escaping to the comfort of your home with T.V. shows and movies that refresh your mind. Immerse yourself in winter escapes with movies like Frozen or The Holiday, which offer cool, snowy landscapes and heartwarming stories that provide a mental cool down during the hot days of the summer. If your home is too hot to spend time in, visit air-conditioned public spaces like malls, recreation centres, and libraries to find some relief.
7. Stay Informed
It’s important to routinely check temperature advisories and be ready with suitable actions to cope with heat conditions. Stay up to date with local weather and news broadcasts to learn about potential heat waves or wildfire hazards. By applying these measures to your day-to-day life, you can enjoy the summer and make it a memorable experience.
