KSA council prepares 2025 budget, plans $67,000 New Year Bash
Councillors didn’t pass any motions ex-camera during either of the council meetings
The Kwantlen Student Association announced it is preparing a budget for the upcoming fiscal year during a council meeting on Dec. 11.
As per the KSA’s regulations, a final budget for the society should be adopted by Jan. 30. The document should include the council’s budget projection adopted the previous year, expenditures, and revenues to date.
“The goal is to create a sustainable financial plan that will allow us to continue supporting our student community and enhancing campus life,” Vice-President Student Life Yashanpreet Guron wrote in his report.
He added that while the budget has not yet been finalized, the KSA is working with “stakeholders” to ensure the financial plan reflects their priorities and supports student initiatives.
The student association is also planning to hold a New Year Bash on Jan. 4 at Riverside Signature Banquet Hall in Surrey. Indian singer and songwriter Sharry Mann will be a special guest at the event.
“This event will be an opportunity for students to come together, reflect on the past year, and celebrate the beginning of a new one,” Guron wrote.
Executive Director Timothii Ragavan said that the association is planning to hold its general elections in February next year and is working on deciding prospective dates.
Dec. 13 meetings
The KSA held both council and executive committee meetings two days later on Dec. 13.
At the council meeting, Goyal said in a joint executive committee report that the association successfully hosted its Champions of Community event, where members of council and the committee presented eight local organizations with donations of $2,000 each from the KSA.
He also said the committee has been involved in distributing the KSA’s Christmas baskets to students and intend to provide some more due to “high positive feedback from the student community.”
Goyal added that executives will be working to “tailor down the feedback” from a feedback box the KSA set up at the KPU Surrey campus for students to voice their suggestions or concerns.
In his report, Ragavan said he met with legal counsel to continue discussions on the chief returning officer position, which remains vacant.
At the executive committee meeting, the student union approved $1,600.74 for a KSA Making a Difference event.
The committee allocated $1,200 for an end-of-semester meet and greet hosted by the Hindu Student Association. Executives also provided $700 for the Brew Club’s year-end party, with a note to provide no alcohol reimbursement in the approval.
Executives also approved $425 for the Operation and Technical Management Club’s spring 2025 orientation event at the KPU Civic Plaza campus.
KSA council and executives went in-camera, which are private discussions, during all three meetings of the week. Councillors did not approve any motions ex-camera, except the requests to go in-camera as well as adopting the agenda and previous meeting minutes.
Each council member receives an attendance honorarium of $100 for regularly scheduled and special council meetings, according to the KSA’s regulations.
The next KSA council meeting is scheduled for Dec. 20 at noon, with an executive committee meeting set to follow at 1:00 pm. Interested students can email info@kusa.ca to join the meetings.
