Meet KPU: Lexi Chang
Chang’s collection HAZI HAUS was showcased at Vancouver Fashion Week
Lexi Chang is a bachelor of design in fashion and technology alumna from Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
After graduating in 2021, Chang began working in the product development industry. This year, she launched her passion project HAZI HAUS with the goal of evolving it into a fashion line. Chang presented her collection at Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW) for Spring/Summer 2025.
Born in Taiwan, Chang’s flair for fashion came from her father, who was passionate about the textile industry. At a young age, she found herself surrounded by fabrics and creativity, which sparked her love for the fashion industry.
“Chang is driven by her relentless curiosity for the human condition; the rich tapestry of emotions, experiences, and desires that define them,” the HAZI HAUS website reads. “Chang blends her passion with her unique story and constant quest for self-discovery.”
When did you join the KPU community and why?
What truly drew me to KPU was the opportunity to pursue a diverse course plan that allowed me to explore my passions while staying grounded in my career aspirations. The hands-on learning approach resonated deeply with me, as I knew that applying what I learn in real-world settings would help me grow and build confidence in my field. KPU’s strong industry connections through internships provided a unique chance to gain practical experience and start forming meaningful relationships within my professional network.
I’ve been incredibly grateful for the mentorship I’ve received from professors, whose unwavering support and guidance have been invaluable throughout my academic journey and continue to be a source of inspiration. I maintain ongoing relationships with many of them, and their advice and encouragement remain a crucial part of my career development.
Additionally, the opportunity to study abroad through a student-exchange program was a dream come true. It allowed me to experience new cultures, broaden my perspectives, and enrich my education in ways that have had a lasting impact. Overall, the university has provided me with a safe space to discover my passions, push beyond my limits, and gain confidence in my abilities. It has been a transformative journey, one that has taught me to embrace uncertainty and, ultimately, helped me find my own voice.
I’m still very close and involved in the KPU community. I still go back to the Wilson School of Design and guest speak to the younger classes. It’s just something that I really love doing. I love mentoring students, and there’s still a lot of the students in the school who I’m in contact with. It’s just very fascinating to see how well the students are doing, and it’s quite a rewarding feeling to be their mentor and just working alongside them.
What is your favourite story of your time at KPU?
I think I have way too many stories to share about my time at KPU. I remember, with my cohort, staying late at school and trying to work on projects and helping each other out. A sense of community was always there at KPU. I really enjoyed my time working with my peers and also having a really close relationship with a lot of my instructors. A lot of my good friends now are actually people that I went to school with, who were in my class.
There were a lot of subjects that I really liked within my program. There’s tons of things that were really fascinating to me, like learning about textiles. We had classes that were focused on fabrics and textiles, and also on surface design. I really loved those experimental classes. A lot of the technical skills that we built by using Adobe software and computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) programs were really fun, too. Just learning about the technology and how it can be used in my field, how that translates into my day-to-day work now. There’s so many that I really enjoyed. It’s definitely a blend of that creative aspect of design, but also the technicality of things.
What is something you’d like to say to people new to KPU?
I really found a sense of community and belonging during my time at KPU, and a lot of great friendships came out of it as well. The instructors are amazing, and from time to time, when I go back and visit, it’s always really good to see them. There was great guidance, community, and really knowledgeable instructors with a lot to offer. I would definitely encourage students to join KPU.
What are you working on right now?
I’m currently trying to get into the logistics of how I would like to proceed with HAZI HAUS, potentially building an e-commerce website and seeing what I would like to do with it. I’ve always been fond of working with technology and learning different softwares. It’s always been a really joyful ride. There’s definitely hurdles when learning how to navigate through new things, but it’s more about displaying my portfolio. I’m hoping to work out some of the logistics so that I can have products on the website. I’m a one-man show working out things, searching for tutorials if needed, and spending extended periods of time understanding how the website builder works. There’s a lot of things in the works right now, and so I’m figuring those things out at the same time. I’m just hoping to turn it into a fashion label in the future.
What is something you’d like people to know about you?
HAZI HAUS is the cumulation of all the emotions and experiences that fulfill me. It is a tribute to a dear friend in my youth, to the girl who used to affectionately call me little “hasi.” From the days when my friends and I would dream of the wonderous things we would one day set off to do. HAZI HAUS is a promise to myself.
