The Kwantlen Polytechnic University brewing and brewery operations program is hosting a free, interactive event called Brewing Discovery Day where potential students interested in learning more about pursuing a career in brewing at the university can gain hands-on experience.

The event, which will take place on May 27 at the KPU Brew Lab on the Langley campus from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, will provide attendees insight into a typical day in the life of a brewing student.

Presented by the KPU brewing faculty, the event is set to feature a live brew demonstration, a quality-control session in the chemistry lab, a mini-sensory seminar, and beer tasting.

This will be KPU’s second Brewing Discovery Day. The first one was held in July last year.

The event aims to provide a more engaging experience than a typical information session, Dominic Bernard, brewing instructor and chair of KPU’s brewing and brewery operations program, wrote in an email statement to The Runner

“The brewing department wanted to host a more hands-on information session than our regular in-person sessions and offer a glimpse into what a day-in-the-life of a student was like,” he wrote.

The evening will guide attendees through a series of interactive aspects of the program, including shadowing a brewing instructor during a live brew to see the program’s pilot brewing system in action.

These sessions are meant to help participants get a better sense of what the brewing and brewery operations diploma program entails, Bernard wrote, adding the faculty hope students gain “a better understanding of … what it’s like to be in the brewery, a lab, and a sensory classroom on campus.”

“The Brewing Discovery Day is a great opportunity for folks who are seriously considering applying to the Brewing diploma or have already applied,” Bernard wrote, adding that while the event is geared towards prospective students, anyone from the public interested in learning about beer and brewing is welcome to attend.
