Summer is fast approaching, which means now is the perfect time to indulge in new shows and movies.
If you’re taking summer classes, you may have a tight schedule, but it’s important to take breaks and relax once in a while. Here are some of my recommendations to help you unwind in this season.
Outer Banks
Available on Netflix, this series is about a group of teenagers who live on an island divided by wealth. There are the blue-collar Pogues and the wealthy Kooks.
The friends in the show go on an adventure-filled journey, following clues that will lead them to find treasure. Along the way, they have to go through the corrupt Kooks and other obstacles to get the recognition they deserve.
Outer Banks is full of mystery, adventure, drama, and thrilling parts, which is what I love about it. The fact that it is also a coming-of-age show and takes place on an island also screams summertime.
Grease
I have to add a musical to my list of recommendations. This 1978 gem, available on Disney+, is a timeless, cheerful, and light-hearted musical that is perfect for the sunny season — like, it perfectly fits the criteria for a summertime movie!
Set in the ‘50s, two high-school students, Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson, unexpectedly reunite after having a summertime romance. They have to get through the drama and pressure from their peers in order to rekindle that flame.
Even though I have never been a big fan of musicals, this is the one movie I actually enjoy. It’s catchy and entertaining, which makes it a fun one to watch.
Back to the Future
This classic film, available on Amazon Prime, gives off major summertime vibes, and is perfect for students to watch this summer.
Released in 1985, Back to the Future is about this teenager named Marty McFly who accidentally travels back in time to the ‘50s and meets the high-school version of his parents.
He then has to work his way through a very different world in order to get back to his own time. I’ve watched this so many times — it’s one of my all-time favourite movies! I would consider it a comedy, which is why I love it so much.
If you haven’t watched it already, I highly recommend Back to the Future.
Adolescence
This show was released this year on Netflix. It’s about a 13-year-old boy named Jamie Miller who gets arrested for the murder of his classmate.
Adolescence only consists of four episodes, each telling a different aspect of the case. It talks about important issues among youth, such as bullying and the harmful use of social media.
One amazing feature of this show is that each hour-long episode is filmed entirely in one shot. This show is extremely captivating, keeping you on the edge of your seat. It’s filled with suspense and is honestly life-changing. No matter what genre you like, Adolescence ends up impacting everyone.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
This is one of those movies that doesn’t necessarily give off specific summertime vibes but is definitely a must-watch nonetheless.
Released in 2005 and available on Disney+, this movie is about four siblings who enter a whole different world through the other side of the wardrobe.
In this world, they encounter a lion named Aslan, and together, they try to defeat an evil witch who is trying to take over the kingdom. What I love about this movie is how many different turns it takes — you never really know what to expect while watching it.
