The Kwantlen Student Association held executive committee meetings on July 10 and 16, where it renewed student clubs and approved new initiatives.
In his report from the July 10 meeting, Vice-President Student Life Ishant Goyal said he had been working on the planning and execution of the KSA’s July 9 Garden of Gratitude event, which was a celebration of student clubs and their leaders at the Surrey campus.
“We saw a lot of students there,” Goyal said. “Every club was able to come on the stage, get a photograph, and then was handed over tokens of appreciation.”
He said he’s also planning the student union’s next event, KSA Got Talent, which is taking place on July 23 from noon to 3:00 pm at the KPU Surrey Conference Centre. The event will offer a supportive stage for students to share their talents, the KSA’s website reads. There will be prizes for all performers.
Goyal said the association will be planning further events with the events teams, such as bowling, axe throwing, go-kart racing, and paintball.
“We would also be planning up a wider event and new swag distribution … for the fall semester [for] all the incoming new students,” Goyal added. “I also had the opportunity to meet a couple of coordinators from the KSA to see how student life at the KSA can be enhanced.”
The executive committee renewed three clubs — the Accounting Students of Kwantlen (ASK), Muslim Student Association (MSA), and KPU Pinoy Club — until April 30, 2026, subject to the KSA’s bylaws, regulations, and policies.
The KSA executives approved $3,600 in funding for the KPU Cricket Club’s tournament entry fees and equipment for the British Columbia Mainland Cricket University League.
The executive committee also approved $800 for a training session and friendly tournament put on by the KPU Badminton Club, $750 for the MSA’s BBQ – Farewell event, which will serve as an end-of-year community celebration, and $600 for the KPU Badminton Club’s practice session.
The committee also allocated $185 for the Kwantlen IT Club’s Docker 101 event, a hands-on beginner workshop on containerization, and $128 for its Software Development 101 workshop.
During the July 16 executive committee meeting, the KSA approved $20,382.50 for discounted Cineplex movie tickets for KPU students.
Students can access the tickets for $11.50 including taxes by presenting a valid student ID at the KSA front desks.
In his report, Goyal said the student association is in the process of transferring some of the student union building funds into “long-term investments.” The KSA is also looking forward to collaborating with member services and the accounting department on initiatives.
“We will be sponsoring and paying for the food that will be put up in baskets at the counter at the Surrey library, because it’s going to be open 24/7 [during exam season],” he said.
Goyal also said that the KSA will be distributing sets of about 300 copper water bottles and glasses for students as part of an initiative to support active health.
“[It’s] something that’s more concrete and more usable, and because of the medicinal and the herbal properties of copper, we are hoping that we can spend our budget on something that’s more worth it for students.”
He said the KSA is also planning to provide free coffee at Grassroots Café for students during the exam season.
The association also approved $335 for the Barkat Club’s movie screening of Red isn’t a Whisper, which takes place on July 23 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at KPU’s Surrey campus.
The committee also approved a total of $950 for the Kwantlen Sikh Students’ Association’s Sikhri X SSA Talk, as well as $974 for the Riyasat Club’s club banner, business cards, and cultural items. The executives also approved $146 for the Kwantlen Psychology Society’s CV Workshop.
A motion to approve $8,000 for the KSA Peer Support’s Sound of Creation Music and Fashion Show was deferred to the next meeting. Two motions for the KPU Pinoy Club were also deferred.
The next KSA council meeting is scheduled for July 24 at 1:00 pm, with the executive committee meeting slated for 3:00 pm the same day. Interested students can email info@kusa.ca to join the meeting.
