The Kwantlen Student Association executive committee approved expenses for its delegation’s trip to Toronto and Montreal, during a meeting on Dec. 9.

The committee allocated up to $20,000 for the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) national general meeting from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4 in Toronto. Council members Gurdit Singh, Rohit Uppal, Jagjivan Sran, and Shawinderdeep Singh, who is the associate president, attended as delegates.

The committee also allocated up to $15,000 for external work in Toronto and Montreal between Nov. 5 to 9, which the conference delegation attended — in addition to President and Vice-President University Affairs Paramvir Singh, Vice-President External Affairs Harpal Singh, and Arts Representative Amanpreet Singh.

“Most [of the funding] was to cover the accommodation and meal coverage of delegates and other expenses during [the] conference,” Harpal wrote in the meeting’s Microsoft Teams chat.

The Runner reached out to the delegation for more information about the trip and use of the funding and will provide updates as they become available.

The committee also approved $5,000 for swag items for clubs for Welcome Week, as well as a combined $4,210.02 in funding to support the booth activities and participation of student clubs at the KSA’s Carnival of Clubs event on Nov. 19 in the Surrey campus courtyard.

The clubs that received funding were the KPU Japan Club, KPU Pre-Law Club, Snapshot Society, KPU Pinoy Club, NextGen Club, KPU Dance Club, KPU Cricket Club, Sociology Students Club, KPU Marketing Association, Muslim Student Association (MSA), KPU Badminton Club, and GRACE.

Executives also approved $1,800 for the KPU Badminton Club’s league finals and $1,500 for its inventory and equipment update. The MSA received $1,550 for its Screening for Solidarity event and $300 for its Sister’s Chai and Chat event.

The executive committee also held a meeting on Dec. 11, where it approved $3,600 for KSA Peer Support’s Indigenous and Black student well-being scholarship.

Peer Support Coordinator Selina Maedel said criteria for selection for the awards was based on financial need, demonstrated leadership, creativity, and benefit to the KPU student community.

“Students have filled out an application form, explaining how the money from this scholarship will support their journey to continue their education at KPU,” Maedel wrote in the meeting’s chat.

“Peer Support have reviewed the applications, and have selected the top 5 students, one who will receive $600 and the rest $750 to support their KPU studies (totaling $3600). This not only will benefit the students, but will help Peer Support with student outreach and help us to build closer connections with students on campus.”

Maedel said the deadline has passed for the scholarship, but it was advertised through physical posters and on Instagram.

The executive committee also approved $1,078 for lunch and refreshments for the Kwantlen Psychology Society’s psychology honours thesis defense event. The Kwantlen Sikh Students’ Association received $950 for its Sikhri X SSA Talk event and $740 for catering and materials for its Gurbani calligraphy workshop.

The committee also approved $490 for the KPU Pinoy Club’s Biggest Loser weight loss awarding ceremony and $410 for Barkat’s Sisterhood Summit event.

The KPU Pinoy Club also received $400 approved for its leaders’ quarter two meeting and quarter three planning. Barkat received $362 for supplies and refreshments for its Science Behind Menstruation outreach event and $335 for its Red Isn’t a Whisper movie screening. The KPU Badminton Club got $300 to cover tournament registration fees for three-to-five KPU students participating in the Yonex C1 Tournament in Richmond.

Executives approved $296 refreshments and promotional materials for the Kwantlen IT Club’s Building AI-powered Apps with Azure AI workshop, as well as $236 for food and prizes for its SQL Game Night and $200 for its Scripting with PowerShell event.

The committee also approved $165 approved for the Kwantlen Psychology Society’s website domain renewal and Canva Pro subscription and $146 approved for its CV workshop. The Kwantlen IT Club got $125 approved for its Programming 101 workshop, and Barkat received $100 for its Blooming Beginning event.

Two more clubs received funding for their participation in the KSA’s Carnival of Clubs event: $410 for the Snapshot Society and $100 for the KPU SOCA (Students of Caribbean and African) Descent Club.

No executive committee member shared an oral report at either of the meetings. The Runner has reached out to the executives who indicated they would email their reports, but has yet to hear back.

Executives did not vote to schedule its next meeting, but Vice-President Student Life Ishant Goyal said it will likely be sometime in January depending on the business of the committee.
