Sumeet Sharma, a powerlifter for Team Canada, teamed up with his sponsors to set up donation boxes in Surrey for the victims of the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting.

Community members can donate funds until Feb. 26 at three of Surrey’s Supplement King locations: Morgan Crossing, Newton, and Strawberry Hill.

The funds raised will be going towards the victims of the shooting.

“First and foremost our deepest condolences go out to the parents, family, and friends of these young victims,” Sharma wrote in a statement to The Runner. “[As a parent] myself, I cannot imagine what these parents are feeling and the hurt they’re going through.”

This is not the first time Sharma has supported victims of tragic events. In the past, he has  fundraised for Ukraine, Pakistan, India, and the Middle East. He also set up donation boxes to support those affected by the Lapu Lapu tragedy in Vancouver last year.

“When such a senseless tragic event happens right in your own backyard, it’s hard not to want to help in any way you can,” he wrote.

The donation drive is focused on collecting monetary contributions for those affected by the shooting. Sharma added that if people cannot make a contribution at any of the donation box locations, they are encouraged to donate to the GoFundMe page for Maya Gebala, one of the shooting victims.

“I just feel that we can all overcome this tragedy,” Sharma wrote. “Everyone in the community just has to work as one.”
