KPU Social Enterprise Club hosts virtual Halloween movie night
Staying home and watching Scooby-Doo from bed was a good way to stay safe this Halloween
In an effort to celebrate the spooky holiday with COVID-19 precautions in mind, KPU’s Social Enterprise Club hosted a virtual watching party for the live-action Scooby-Doo movie.
Made possible by Netflix and the Chrome extension Teleparty (formerly known as Netflix Party), students talked about their favourite Halloween costumes, horror movies, and their online school experiences.
“We’re all trying to adjust to online learning now, and everyone is under a lot of stress — including myself — and it’s Halloween. It doesn’t feel like it’s Halloween because of everything that we are all going through,” says Simran Gill, the SEC Director of Events and Student Life.
“As a club … [we thought] ‘We could actually still do something online and stay safe, but still have fun at the same time.’”
The Social Enterprise Club, previously named KPU’s Pause for a Cause, has a goal to educate and promote all aspects of social enterprise within the KPU community, according to their website. They focus on hosting events, fundraising and hosting charitable campaigns to educate students, volunteering with local organizations, and engaging with students through social media.
The event kicked off with introductions in the chat as they watched the Mystery Gang attempt to capture their latest offender, the Luna Ghost.
“There were five people in total [that attended], and in the chat, it just felt so easy to talk because everyone was nice, and they were engaging,” says Gill.“There were people who signed up that didn’t show up, which is completely fine.”
As the movie played, Gill posted ice breaker questions in the chat to encourage interaction.
Despite attendance being on the smaller scale, the event was a great way for attendees to cozy up in bed with a nostalgic and mysterious movie while chatting about personal favourite Halloween costumes from the past. Other students in the chat said that they were happy to take the night off to forget about their school assignments.
Gill says that while they haven’t worked out all the details for upcoming events, she encourages students to stay on the lookout in November for potential workshops or local volunteering opportunities. Gill also says that for students who are interested, there are plenty of opportunities to join the SEC team.
Within the KPU SEC, there are multiple director positions available, including Director of Events (workshop and industry tours), Director of Philanthropy, Director of Communications, Director of Social Media, Director of Graphic Design, Director of Website Design, Director of Public Relations, and KPU Social Enterprise Ambassador.
If students are interested in applying for any of these positions, email the SEC at kpusocialenterpriseclub@gmail.com. And for more information on the club and upcoming events, follow them on social media, @kpusec on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
