News Brief: Committee appointments made at first meeting for the new KSA council
The Kwantlen Student Association held their first official council meeting with the new council on April 14 at 10:00 am in hybrid format.
Council members Asad Husain, Jashandeep Singh, Jashanpreet Singh Maan, Jaspreet Shokar, Abdullah Randhawa, Gurtejpreet Kaur Kaliyan, Destiny Lang, Gurnoor Kaur, Jasmine Kaur Kochhar, Jobanpreet Singh, Nitin Aggarwal, Amandeep Brar, Manraj Grewal, Amitoj Singh, Taranpreet Singh, and Akashdeep Sidhu were in attendance.
Jashanpreet Sekhon, Yugveer Gill, Mehakdeep Singh, Akashdeep Singh, and Upeksha Gunatilake were unable to attend.
After a land acknowledgement, the March 10, March 17, and March 30 council meeting minutes were approved. There was an error in the April 5 council meeting minutes stating Sidhu was nominated to be VP finance and operations when this didn’t occur, and a motion was passed to make the correction. The minutes for the in-camera sessions for the Jan. 6, Feb. 10, March 10, and March 30 meetings of council are not yet available for adoption.
Members for several committees were appointed.
Grewal, Taranpreet, Maan, Gill, Kaliyan, Sidhu, and Aggarwal were appointed as members of the governance committee. This committee’s job is to review the bylaws, regulations, and perform other duties as stipulated by the regulations.
Taranpreet, Aggarwal, Shokar, Amitoj, and Maan were appointed as members of the university affairs committee.
This committee’s job is to provide a platform for discussion on changes and issues relating to university policies affecting students, review policies relating to academic matters, monitor the VP university affairs’ performance, and make recommendations to council.
Kaur, Jobanpreet, Brar, Gill, and Gunatilake were appointed to the student life committee, which they make recommendations to council on issues relating to the recreational campus life and social needs of members, review the performance of VP of student life, and make recommendations to council.
Kaliyan, Taranpreet, Husain, Kaur, and Amitoj were appointed as members of the finance and operations committee.
The job of this committee is to develop the budget of the society in consultation with the VP finance and operations, recommend the budget for the current fiscal year along with necessary budget amendments, and make recommendations to council relating to student services provided or offered by the society.
Maan, Taranpreet, Husain, Grewal, and Aggarwal were appointed to the external affairs committee. The job of this committee is to make recommendations to council on the relationship between the society and external organizations, monitor the performance of VP external affairs, and select delegates and any external workshops or conferences the council attends.
Gill, Grewal, Jobanpreet, and Sidhu were appointed as members of the environmental sustainability committee. This committee makes recommendations to the council on the relationships between the society and external organizations relating to environmental sustainability.
Shokar, Aggarwal, Kaur, Husain, and Lang were appointed as members of the student justice and equity committee. This committee makes recommendations in regards to partnerships with external social justice organizations, along with the addition or renewal of policies related to social justice or equity issues.
In Lang’s report, they attended the Moving Trans History Forward Conference at the University of Victoria from March 30 to April 2 where they connected with queer advocates and academics while also listening to presentations by 2SLGBTQ+ scholars.
“As a transgender person, finding community and support at this conference is lifesaving to me during a time where the rights and freedoms of transgender people are threatened,” Lang said.
