But joy quickly turned to heartbreak as news broke the morning of July 3 about a tragic car accident in Spain that claimed the lives of both Jota and his brother, André Silva. The two were traveling along a highway in the city of Zamora, when a tire blowout caused their vehicle to veer off the road and catch fire.
Jota, 28, had become a beloved figure at Liverpool over five memorable seasons, scoring 65 goals and playing a crucial role in securing three major trophies. Known for his sharp instincts, work rate, and ability to change a game in an instant, Jota was admired not just for his talent but for his humble and hardworking nature.
Silva, 25, was also a professional footballer, carving out his own respected path in the sport. Most recently playing for Futebol Clube de Penafiel in Portugal’s Liga Portugal 2, he was recognized for his dedication on the pitch and his steady contributions as a midfielder. A wake was held on July 4 in their hometown of São Cosme, Gondomar, Portugal, where family, friends, and fans came together to honour the lives and legacies of Jota and Silva. Their absence leaves a profound void, but their memories and contributions to football will endure.
