Summer break is bringing a new wave of movies that we can look forward to.
The following five films might just be the most worthwhile to check out — so get out your ticket, popcorn, and soda ready.
The Mandalorian and Grogu
I know Disney is desperate to get Star Wars into theatres this summer, but this Mandalorian movie should’ve been released on Disney+ — just like the TV series. The theatrical re-release of Episode 1 of The Phantom Menace in 2024 was more exciting to anticipate than Mando’s next galactic adventure. That’s from a big fan of the original show.
I’m not sure if I’ll catch this movie in theatres, as I’m more pre-occupied enjoying my favourite galaxy with the recent Darth Maul animated show. But if you’re curious to see Mando and Grogu on the big screen, Pedro Pascal’s Beskar-wearing bounty hunter will be flying to a screening near you. The Mandalorian and Grogu comes out May 22.
Disclosure Day
When you put aliens and Steven Spielberg together, you tend to get movies that re-define iconic, whether it’s his terrifying rendition of War of the Worlds or the touching sentiments of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Spielberg is at it again with his brand new alien thriller Disclosure Day.
He no doubt paved the way for alien movies, but I’m not sure if Disclosure Day will top or rival what newer directors have done with aliens since E.T. phoned home. I’m optimistic, though, because at this point, I’m just happy we have a Spielberg movie to look forward to in theatres again. Disclosure Day comes out June 12.
The Odyssey
It’s been two years since Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer swept the Oscars, and now he’s ready to debut his newest movie about the classic Greek epic, The Odyssey.
The film follows Matt Damon as King Odysseus as he and his crew go on a sea voyage of mythical proportions to return home. Nolan has never done a Greek epic before, so I’m unsure how effective his take will be on the famous myth.
However, if Nolan’s past work and the film’s trailer say anything, we can expect his usual array of incredible visuals and enormous productions. Hopefully, this movie will motivate studios to invest more in this genre for the future. The Odyssey comes out July 17.
Supergirl
Milly Alcock, who gained global recognition for the House of the Dragon TV series, gets to carry on the Supergirl mantle in film after Sasha Calle played the character in the 2023’s The Flash. It’s sad that Calle won’t soar to the skies again, but Alcock’s Supergirl trailer shows she will no doubt give Kara Zor-El that burst of bright, refreshing energy to the role.
Based on the trailer, she plays Supergirl as an aimless youth with no motivation to save the world. Alcock also gives an unconventional portrayal that makes the character feel comically unpredictable. She shares her adventure with her scrappy super-dog Krypto. Who doesn’t like a furry canine helping a superhero? Supergirl comes out June 26.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
I’m looking forward to Tom Holland donning the red-and-blue spider suit again after his last performance in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. Of course, a Spider-Man flick starring Holland isn’t complete without Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. I’m glad this trio is back in this latest sequel.
The trailer shows new and old characters showing up, including a surprise appearance from Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, providing some interesting crossovers to look forward to in Spidey’s newest adventure. Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes out July 31.
