Suhana Gill will run for Surrey city council in the 2026 municipal election.
Gill, who was the Kwantlen Student Association’s women’s representative for the 2024-25 term, will run with Doug McCallum and the Safe Surrey Coalition.
“I am running because Surrey is changing rapidly, and our council needs leadership that reflects our actual demographic reality,” Gill wrote in a statement to The Runner.
She graduated from Kwantlen Polytechnic University with a bachelor of arts in political science in June. During her time at the KSA, she also chaired the governance and university affairs committees.
Gill works as a real estate agent, which she wrote gives her a “unique, front-row seat to the raw realities of Surrey’s housing market, the affordability crisis, and exactly what young families go through when trying to establish a home here.”
In a statement to The Runner, the Safe Surrey Coalition wrote that young people need a voice in council.
“[Gill] represents the next generation of Surrey leadership, and she’s running to make sure decisions about Surrey’s future are made with young people in the room,” the Safe Surrey Coalition wrote.
Gill adds that she’s running with Doug McCallum and the “results-driven” Safe Surrey Coalition because “it creates the ultimate balance of next-generation vision and proven political execution.”
She wrote that her campaign will focus on affordability, infrastructure, safety, and youth and young families — who make up 45 per cent of Surrey’s population.
“Residents are asking themselves: ‘Will my kids be able to afford a home here? Is our infrastructure growing fast enough to handle this population? Are our neighbourhoods staying safe?’” Gill wrote.
She adds that students see her as a peer.
“When students look at my platform, they see a candidate who isn’t just treating ‘student issues’ as a checklist item,” Gill wrote.
“Surrey will soon be the largest city in British Columbia, and the people who will live longest in its future are the students at KPU right now. October 17 is their chance to choose it,” the Safe Surrey Coalition wrote.
The 2026 municipal election will take place on Oct. 17. Advance voting will open on Oct. 7, 10, 14, and 15.
