Food combinations that give me the ick
Who thought of making these? Why did these get popular?
While there’s a lot to experience in life, one experience everyone seems to find joy in is food, especially combining different food options. With abundant food options around the world, the number of combinations to try are endless.
Some tasty food combinations have become a staple, such as cookie-flavoured ice cream, now a common flavour. Poutine, composed of fries, gravy, and cheese curds, is one of my favourite foods to consume whenever I can, especially since there’s more to experiment with upon its simple foundation.
While there are many delicious food combinations out there and many more yet to be discovered, there are a few that just give me the ick and should’ve stayed in their experimentation phase.
Pineapple on pizza
I’m aware Hawaiian is a common pizza to order with its ham and pineapple toppings. I know it has its fair share of fans who enjoy eating that fruit on pizza. I also know I’m likely going to cause another stir about this again, but I will never like pineapple on pizza.
Something about the pineapple being dried out and having an overall weird taste might be why I dislike Hawaiian pizza. It’s a shame though since I like both pineapple and pizza, just not together. I can definitely live without the topping no longer existing, but I can’t say the same for the surprising number of friends I have who like Hawaiian.
Pickles (themselves, on burgers, on anything, yuck)
While I’ve gotten incrementally better at giving pickles a chance, I can never get myself to tolerate them, let alone eating them. Whenever I can, I always look through my burgers to see if there are pickles and dump them into the compost where they belong.
I’m not sure if it’s just the different foods pickles are typically thrown into, but they always taste bitter to me. Crazy enough, I enjoy cucumbers, which are what pickles are before they get put into a brine. So I guess you could say I actually do like pickles, but only before anything extra is added to them.
Corn in ramen
I’m sure plenty of university students have had a phase where they ate nothing but instant ramen for days to save up money. Instant ramen can be tasty and allow for some creativity, like putting in eggs, seaweed, or even lemon juice to add a kick in flavour.
There’s a lot of unique ramen bowls to explore, especially at restaurants. One of my favorites has been ramen noodles in a miso broth with chicken slices, but one I can’t stand is bowls that have corn in them, which I avoid.
This is one of the very few food items that gives me the ick and I don’t know why. I genuinely can’t eat it, I just don’t like corn with my ramen noodles.
Spicy ice cream
While I haven’t tried this personally, I have heard this exists. I also hope I never have to try this abomination, even if I was tempted with a bribe.
Eating ice cream helps give you both relief and happiness, something which adding a spicy element cancels out. I already dislike most spicy food. So, I hope more food combinations like making a dessert spicy never gets picked up again, like ever.
