Going under the sea to test out Wendy’s new Krabby Patty Kollab Burger

This is as close as you’ll get to finding out the secret recipe for Mr. Krabs’s famous burger

Unless you’ve been living in a pineapple under the sea, you’ll know that Mr. SquarePants has taken over Wendy’s to create real-life Krabby Patties for the first time.

To celebrate 25 years of the popular children’s T.V. show SpongeBob SquarePants, the burger chain has launched themed speciality items for customers. While not straight from the Krusty Krab itself, Wendy’s is now offering the Krabby Patty Kollab Burger and Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty.

As someone who grew up with SpongeBob SquarePants as a child and enjoys Wendy’s every once in a while, I wanted to try out the new limited-time menu items, especially since this is probably as close as I’ll get to figuring out what the secret formula for the burger is.

The burger features a quarter-pound of beef patty, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, and a secret Krabby Kollab sauce. As a small disclaimer, I’m someone who hates pickles. I wish the employees forgot to put those on the burger, but, nonetheless, I gave it a try.

I’m not going to lie to anyone reading this, but I felt underwhelmed by both the burger’s taste and presentation. If you’ve had a Dave’s Single from Wendy’s before, the Krabby Patty Kollab  Burger is basically just that but with the special sauce. I wouldn’t recommend getting it, to be honest, as it’s basically just a regular Wendy’s menu item.

Obviously, I doubt Wendy’s would tell me what the sauce is made out of, just like Mr. Krabs with the secret formula. If I had to guess, though, it tasted like some mix of salad dressing and mayonnaise. If anything, at least it’s better than whatever chum comes out of the Chum Bucket.

After some disappointment with the burger, the Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty surprised me. While it’s mostly just a vanilla frosty, it does have a pineapple-and-mango-flavoured puree, which made for a nice treat.

Overall, even though my initial thoughts on the food are more mixed than negative, I’d recommend trying the Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty — but that’s it.

I also feel like there’s more Wendy’s could’ve done with the SpongeBob SquarePants collaboration since there’s quite a few different food items in the famous cartoon. One example is the Krusty Krab Pizza, but, admittedly, it might be something more geared towards Pizza Hut instead.

I’m not upset at the Krabby Patty Kollab Burger for being bad, just disappointed at Wendy’s for doing what seems like the bare minimum in this collaboration. Well, maybe I’m a little upset because I ended up eating a Dave’s Single when I prefer getting their spicy chicken burgers and poutine.

Maybe one day, we’ll get a more faithful recreation of the show’s iconic burger, but, for now, I might get another pineapple frosty because at least there’s that.
