As the Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo celebrates the year of gaming past, the event also welcomes some elements from the present.
The expo’s poster includes various characters playing soccer, including Samus Aran, Chun-Li, Lara Croft, Princess Peach, Zelda and Bayonetta — a nod to the FIFA World Cup.
Vendors and artists overtook the main floor of the Anvil Centre. This year, I purchased a few games for the Nintendo DS systems and a Call of Duty game for the XBox 360 console.
I also bought prints of protagonists for the last three installments of the Persona franchise. The vendor selling them was also a big Persona fan and that led to a long conversation about franchise.
We talked about how excited we were for the reveal of Persona 6 and speculated what it could be about. We also hoped for an older cast for Persona 6, including the protagonist.
We discussed the remake of Persona 4 Revival that is coming out early next year. Unlike many fans, I became a fan of the franchise through the anime adaptation of Persona 4.
I also finally found a physical copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at the event and bought it on the spot.
The expo also featured trivia panels. Unlike last year, I chose to just watch everyone else try and either flop or rise with the gaming-related questions.
The expo celebrated gaming culture from the past while maintaining relevance in the present. It’s looking to be a fun and exciting event for years to come.
