Students looking for co-op opportunities this summer can still apply until June 15. KPU’s Career Development Centre is encouraging employers to help students complete their work online so they can continue getting paid from home while they learn during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many employers are being encouraged to conduct virtual interviews and access funding support to help them compensate their new student employees.

The program is still accepting applications for summer 2020, after its application deadline was extended. The applications submitted after June 15 will be considered for the fall semester.

“The Career Development Centre at KPU is encouraging and supporting employers to consider remote work opportunities for students,” wrote Julia Denker, Director of KPU’s Career Development Centre, in an email to The Runner.

“In addition to on-site positions that have COVID-19 safety protocols and measures in place, this summer, we saw great success with employers doing virtual interviews with students applying for co-op positions,” she said.

Before students can begin searching for their co-op position, they must take and pass COOP 1101: Job Search Techniques. This one-credit online course includes a three-hour long class divided into six sessions.

Students must also meet the entrance requirements for their assigned program to apply for a co-op position.

The available co-op program options for fall 2020 are accounting, computer-aided design and drafting, criminology, entrepreneurial leadership, environmental protection technology, human resources, information technology, marketing, and operations and supply chain management, as well as one new program: public relations.

Students can also benefit from participating in online co-op information sessions, which teach them how co-op can add to their educational experience and prepare them for their careers.

“We anticipate increased student job opportunities in the fall as more employers and industries across Canada begin to reopen,” said Denker.

An information session was held online on June 10 at 9:30 am and one will be held June 17 at 9:30 am. To register, students can log into Career Connection and access registration under the Event tab and RSVP. They can also sign up for online job preparation and job search webinars through Career Connection.
