Whether it’s picnicking at Crescent Beach or biking along the Seawall, it’s time to head back outdoors

Spring is here in full swing, bringing warm weather and blooming cherry blossoms to the Lower Mainland.

In between rainy April showers, it’s hard not to get outside and enjoy this pre-summer season.

There are a range of activities to do that embrace this time of year, but I narrowed down some of my personal favourites that I recommend you try.

Picnicking

Going for a picnic is a great way to start the spring season. There are so many things to do just in this one activity — you can have great food, sit outside, bask in the sunshine, and play games. It’s best to picnic later in the season to avoid the nippy weather.

In terms of picnic locations, everyone usually goes to the park, but you’re missing out if you don’t try other places. I personally love having a picnic at the beach, and I highly recommend Crescent Beach in Surrey. Depending on how warm it is, you can also go for a swim in the water.

If you’re set on going to a park, I recommend Holland Park near the King George SkyTrain Station because of its many open fields.

Hiking

Even though it can be difficult, especially if you don’t have much experience, hiking is something I recommend because it’s a great way to exercise and take in natural scenery.

Spring is also the best time to go hiking because it can get too hot if you wait until the summer.

Metro Vancouver offers a wide variety of hiking trails that vary in difficulty. The Grouse Grind on Grouse Mountain is one of the more challenging ones, which should only be done if you’re an experienced hiker. If you’re a beginner, like me, you should try the trails at Port Moody’s təmtəmíxʷtən/Belcarra Regional Park, which are really relaxing.

Biking

Long bike rides are a spring must. The Vancouver Seawall is a great location for this activity since there’s a path for biking and you can either bring your own bike or rent one there.

Biking is another great way to stay active as the weather warms up. Biking through the park to places you need to go, or even in your own neighbourhood, are other nice alternatives. All that matters is that you’re outdoors and taking in the scenery and fresh air.

Gardening

This is a perfect activity since early spring is an ideal time for planting. You can either start from scratch by planting some seeds or buy grown plants and flowers.

Gardening keeps you busy and is rewarding. Growing flowers or trees can liven up your backyard, or if you choose to fill a garden with vegetables, then you’ve got fresh, healthy produce for your meals. There are many ways to garden and it’s something I think everyone should try.

Travelling

My last suggestion is to take a trip. It can be a one-day road trip somewhere here in B.C. or somewhere farther away for a couple days.

Taking a trip is a good idea because it gives you time to relax and unwind from school or work. There are countless places to go, all depending on what you want to see and experience.

If you want to go away for a couple of days, I suggest heading to Vancouver Island or the Sunshine Coast. These regions have amazing views and lots to see. Whether it’s beaches or cities, there are plenty of options to choose from!
